Look at That Android Go! – Q2 2010 vs. Q2 2009 – WOW!

Android OS

Are you considering a phone upgrade in the near future?

If you are, you are probably debating the iPhone vs. the Android – and the iPhone seems great because all the apps, however there’s that AT&T (or T-Mobile’s still maturing) network issue. I know this firsthand after my iPhone dropped 6 in under 30 minutes – that morning I said, “Never Again” and I drove over to Verizon and picked up my first Android phone to try it out – and I haven’t gone back.

And it seems I’m not the only one….Look at that Android go! Talk about serious growth in a year huh? Q2 2009 vs. Q2 2010

According to Gartner Group, Android’s market share rocketed from 1.8% in Q2 of ’09 to a whopping 17.2 just one year later. It’s creeping up on RIM and has already surpassed the iPhone.

Personally I’d bet that it surpasses BlackBerry’s share in the next quarter because corporations have really begun their adoption process after vetting it as a viable alternative…It just does too much.

What does this mean to you?

Well, it means that now, more than ever, there’s reason for the app developer to really think twice about not developing apps for Android. And that means more apps for you.

The market is obviously there, healthy, growing quickly and working. It is however frustrating that there are a few “Apple System Only Apps” that may never be ported to the Android, like the GTD app OmniFocus, but I suppose we’ll find alternatives.

Android certainly looks to be the up-and-coming king of the SmartPhone OS – I mean, what can stop it? (Maybe Apple licensing their iOS to others….)

On a side note, who’s the Biggest Looser? Windows Mobile going from 9.3% to 5% – 46% loss… Symbian still dominates, but it’s lost nearly 20% in the last year – and that trend will continue as the Android continues to eat into WinMo, iOS and Symbian.
